Questions to ask before writing a scene, by John August and Craig Mazin

This is a list of questions to ask yourself before writing a scene (in a screenplay), compiled by John August and Craig Mazin. See their "Knowing vs Discovering" episode of their great Scriptnotes podcast for more.

John started out with these questions.

  1. Who's in the scene?
  2. What do these characters want?
  3. What are these characters hiding?
  4. What is the central conflict?
  5. Where does the scene take place?
  6. What just happened before this?
  7. What is going to happen next?
  8. What is the first image we see in the scene? (Also, what is the first line in the scene?)
  9. What must occur in this scene for the scene to make sense (logically) and for it to move the story forward?
  10. How does the scene change the direction of the story?

Then, Craig added these questions.

  1. What is the point of the scene? (Why do I, as writer, want it in the screenplay?)
  2. How will the scene be entertaining?

Nothing original here, just pointing any readers out these interested in this to the Scriptnotes "Knowing vs Discovering" episode.
