David was a professor at the USNA in Annapolis MD for over 30 years, retiring at the end of 2018. For more details, see my CV/research bio. As a fun hobby he started writing fiction and screenplays about ten years ago, but lately it has become an obsession.
Screenwriting experience: David has written both short scripts and features. The shorts include k1ng_Pe5t (2017) and Russell’s Paradox (2019). The features include The Dragon Volant (2020).
Awards: His short script Quantum Insurance won the 2015 Baltimore Screenwriters' Competition in the short category. His short k1ng_Pe5t won third place in 2017 in the same competition. Unfortunately, The Dragon Volant didn’t place in the top three at the 2020 Baltimore Screenwriting Competition, but it did make it to the second round and received a “triple recommend” (for concept, writer and script) from both the first and second reader (which is kind of an award in itself:-).
Production experience: He has made short films from his several of his scripts, including Russell’s Paradox. Moreover, Russell's Paradox was a finalist at the Raw Science Film Festival 2020. He also interned on feature film The Night Watchmen (2017).
Writing Education: David has taken a number of in-person and online writing workshops, such as screenwriting and playwriting classes at the Writer’s Center (in Bethesda MD), both of Steve Kaplan’s excellent comedy classes (one of them twice), and a Sundance class in feature comedy writing. He’s attended ScriptDC each year since 2014 (it was online in 2020), taking the director workshop twice from the great Joan Darling. He’s volunteered as a reader for DC Shorts. American University's Visions Competition, and the Austin Film Festival. It’s fun to analyze stories and write the analysis in a way that will hopefully help the writer.
